The Chinese reconnaissance balloon certainly had espionage tasks, but in the first place it was a diplomatic provocation, believes the former head of armaments at the US Department of Defense Elbridge A. Colby. According to him, there is no end to such provocations – what’s more, there is an ever more realistic threat of a direct military confrontation between the US and China over Taiwan. “It can happen before the end of the decade,” he says in an interview for Lidovky.cz
