Former Pentagon official Elbridge Colby says it is an “indictment of American statecraft” that China and Russia have become such close allies. “It’s basic geopolitical prudence to keep them if not fully apart, at least at a decent distance – and that’s not where they are,” Mr Colby said.

“And if they’re willing to collaborate actively together, that presents really acute problems for us. So, I mean who knows what they’ve been talking about.”
