A former U.S. Department of Defense official warned, “Korea is on a dangerous tightrope between the United States and China,” and warned that “taking a neutral position is actually on the side of China.” In a situation where the US is pursuing economic decoupling (separation) to compete for supremacy with China, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the two-legged Korean government, saying, “The US is an alliance and China is an important economic partner.” According to Voice

of the United States ( VOA ) broadcast, former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Strategy and Power Development at the Ministry of Defense Elbridge Colby at the’Korea-US Relations in the Era of Strategic Competition’ hosted by George Washington University’s Korean Studies Institute on the 22nd (local time). “It will be a dangerous path for Korea to try to skate between the US and China,” he said.

“(This) will motivate both the United States and China to attract Korea to each other,” he said. “Here, the neutral position may actually be on the Beijing side.”

Former Deputy Assistant Secretary Colby was one of the co-authors of the US Defense Strategy ( NDS ) report that outlined strategic competition with China in January 2018, when he was Secretary of Defense James Mattis.
